MyKC Summer Intern Program Offers Solution to Global Race for Talent

by Jessica Palm | May 03, 2019

With a historically low national unemployment rate, it’s no surprise that 3 out of every 4 recruiters believe hiring will be more competitive in the next 12 months. Add to that the fact that  70 percent of the global workforce are passive candidates, and you have an intense  global race for talent.

Today, companies are leveraging internship programs as a way to pipeline young professional talent. But for most Gen Zer’s (individuals born 1995-2010) the position itself is only one part of their expectations of a “quality job.” These young professionals seek companies that help them define their personal purpose and passions.

That’s where TeamKC comes in. Over the last four years, the Kansas City Area Development Council’s talent attraction and retention initiative, TeamKC: Life+Talent, has connected with more than 22,000 young professionals interning with area employers.

TeamKC’s summer “MyKC” program provides opportunities to make meaningful connections with fellow young pros, get connected with community and philanthropic groups, as well as explore everything food, arts and culture, nightlife, sports, and more, that our region has to offer.

Companies including Garmin, H&R Block, Burns & McDonnell, Hallmark, State Street, KPMG and Honeywell have found success in leveraging this initiative for KC as a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining their young professional talent.
