New KCI Airport Terminal Status

by Mary Rooney | Jan 12, 2022

Article from the Kansas City Business Journal by Thomas Friestad

As the largest infrastructure project in Kansas City's history, the new Kansas City International (KCI) Airport terminal project is on track to be completed in early 2023.

Work on the $1.5 billion new terminal passed several important milestones in 2021.

In January 2021, crews "topped out" the new terminal with the erection of all 17,500 individual steel pieces. Last fall, workers closed in the building, rendering it watertight by piecing together virtually all precast concrete and glass curtain wall pieces.

On Dec. 7, the last of 4,373 concrete pieces were installed for the terminal's 6,150-space parking garage. With garage concrete in place, crews are beginning to install shingled glass pieces outside the approximately 2 million-square-foot structure, which is scheduled for completion in early summer.

Significant progress continues to take place inside the new building. At the end November, the building's baggage handling conveyors were 95% installed, or 12,890 of 13,500 total linear feet.

Multiple vendors like Siemens Corp. and SITA have started to incorporate a range of interior systems, including for emergency alerts and the Transportation Security Administration.

Two of four moving walkways have been installed along the terminal's 630-foot-long concourse connector and readied for the start of power-on tests.

Terrazzo flooring is being installed in portions of both of the future terminal's concourses. Workers will embed a tile medallion salvaged from the floor of the now-demolished Terminal A in front of each of the 39 new gates.
