Alicia Solo

Alicia Solo is an energetic singer known for her in-you-face stage presence. Recently going solo after many years of success with Beautiful Bodies, Alicia doesn't know how to slow down. She released a three-song extended play featuring, "Game," "Fevah" and "Good." In July 2017, she performed in the Red, White and Boom lineup in the Power and Light District. When Solo is not touring or recording, she directs music videos, travels to remote countries like Burma and Bolivia, and spends an unhealthy amount of time with her cat Bashful.

What makes Kansas City a great place for creativity and innovation?
There is no doubt that the caliber of art in our city matches that of larger cities like New York (In fact, Kansas City’s inspiring art scene is much of what made me move back to Kansas City from New York).

What makes it special in Kansas City is the way in which artists from different mediums cooperate. I can’t count the number of times that a painter, performance artist, videographer or musician has offered to help on another art project simply because they want to contribute something creative. In Kansas City, you get Midwestern kindness and compassion mixed with the creativity and originality of the artistic centers of the world.

When and where are you happiest?
It may be cliché to say, but I am happiest when I am with my family. I am from a very traditional Italian family. There is a lot of yelling, hugging and eating. The energy in my family’s house is infectious and helps fuel my excitement about things outside the home, including the music I make.

What is your favorite place in Kansas City?
I really enjoy the Crossroads Arts District. Every time I am there, I run into someone passionately making the city better, whether it is a graffiti artist painting, an activist trying to gather signatures or a local business owner like Sheri at the Brick, who has made a neighborhood bar an epicenter for art and creativity.

Where's your favorite place outside of Kansas City?
Naples, Italy.  My family is from there. But more importantly, have you tried their pizza?  Come on!

What's your most treasured personal possession?
My cat would kill me for referring to him as a possession, but damn do I love my cross-eyed cat Bashful. I've even considered bringing him on tour with us. Unfortunately, I don't think bashful would be down. His name is Bashful for a reason.

Who's your favorite fictional hero?
It's a heavy tossup between Beatrix Kiddo from Kill Bill and Hit-Girl from Kick-Ass. There is something exciting about seeing females breaking down gender roles in such a bad ass way.

Who do you most admire in real life?
My parents.  They are both such strong and compassionate people who have encouraged me in everything I do. That kind of support is invaluable when you are an artist.
