Julia Haile

Jazz Singer

Julia Haile is a soulful voice with quiet charisma. She started on the local music scene with Motown/Soul band The Good Foot after studying at the University of Missouri Kansas City conservatory. Julia likes to keep a varied catalogue of music by mixing jazz and soul with elements of reggae, rock and funk. She is recording an album with HiLux with titles like, “Don’t Blame Me,” “Dance with My Baby” and “Take Me Where You Are.” Julia believes the musical energy in Kansas City is emulating, “We really cherish what we create and support anyone working hard to visualize their dreams.”

What is it about KC that inspires creativity in you?
The history of music makes any young musician want to carry on that tradition. There’s so much that has gone on here in the past, and so much that people look at Kansas City for, even if it’s a small foot note [like] where someone’s from or where they put on a great concert. Being in that long tradition of great music feels really great. There’s still so many people in an older generation working and wanting to give their guidance to the younger community.

What is your favorite spot in Kansas City?
When my family moved to Kansas City, we came in on the train. My first memory was Union Station on Main Street. I love being in that area. The lookout from the Liberty Memorial.

Where's your favorite place outside of Kansas City?
I love New Orleans. I have family there, and it’s always a lot of fun. I have been privileged enough to go to New Zealand, and I really want to go back.

What's your most treasured possession?
I have this really cheap little locket that I’ve had since I was a kid with my grandparents’ picture in it. That grandmother recently passed earlier this year. I wore this as a kid when they were still with me and able to be in my life. It doesn’t look like much, but it’s special.

Who's your favorite fictional hero?
Batman. It always has been. We watched it as kids. We watched the old one, the TV show, everything. I still like the character.

Who do you most admire in real-life?
It’s really cheesy to say, but I really admire my mom. She had three kids, went back to school to get a degree when we were young and took care of a household when my dad was out on military tours. She’s a strong woman.

When and where are you happiest?
I think I’m happiest at home when I’m doing every day activities and I get to sing whatever I want to myself even though the dog may start howling. It just feels good to be in my own space doing what I love to do.
