Kansas City Board of Public Utilities
The Board of
Public Utilities, a municipal electric and water utility, began operation in
1909. Today, BPU is an industry leader locally and nationally and the largest
municipal utility in the state of Kansas.
BPU employs a
staff of 650 in various fields including power plant operators, lineman,
welders, accountants, engineers, chemists, and various other professional staff
serving a community of about 150,000 residents and 90,000 jobs through 65,000
electric and 55,000 water meters. Many Fortune 500 companies are among BPU's
customers, including: General Motors, CERTAINTEED Corporation, Owens Coming
Fiberglass, Griffin Wheel, Associated Wholesale Grocers, Burlington Northern
Santa-Fe, KU Medical Center, Procter and Gamble Manufacturing Company, and Water
District #1 of Johnson County.
BPU also
wholesales considerable electricity to cities in Kansas and Missouri, among
those are included Ottawa, Kansas; Garnett, Kansas; and Columbia, Missouri.
