University of Missouri-Columbia

The University of Missouri-Columbia combines the resources of a comprehensive research institution and a state land-grant university with a focus on undergraduate education that has earned it national attention. MU is one of only 32 public universities, and the only public institution in Missouri, to be selected for membership in the Association of American Universities (AAU) and designated "Doctoral/Research Extensive" by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

MU's founding in 1839 represented the birth of public higher education west of the Mississippi River. With more than 200 degree programs through 20 colleges and schools, MU is one of only six institutions in the country with law, medicine and veterinary medicine on a single campus.

As the state's public research university, MU has more than $220 million in ongoing research projects, with a majority in the life sciences. The University is a national leader in such areas as family and community medicine; dispute resolution (law); veterinary oncology, ophthalmology and cardiology; journalism; biological sciences; and writing. MU also is a world leader in radiopharmaceutical development for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
